Scottish University of the Year 2022
The University of Glasgow has been named Scottish University of the Year in The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.
The University rose for the fifth consecutive year to its highest ever position of 12th out of 135 UK institutions, up from 14th last year, and remains second overall in Scotland.
The results highlighted positive scores for student experience and teaching quality, and the positive impact of our Campus Development Programme beginning to be felt as we opened the James McCune Smith Learning Hub.
The results show the University:
- Is ranked first in the UK in three subjects: Food Science, Sports Science & Dentistry
- Has 20 subjects ranked in the top five
- Has 32 subjects ranked in the Top 10
- Teaching Quality and Student Experience both saw significant improvements, with Student Experience now ranked in the top 25 in the UK
These results cap a landmark month for the University, in which we rose to 11th in the UK and second in Scotland in the Guardian University Guide 2022, and improved to 86th in the world and 10th in the UK in the THE World University Rankings.
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow said: “It is very encouraging to see the University of Glasgow once again rising in the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide. This represents our best performance in this ranking and is yet more evidence that the University continues to thrive in the face of increased national and global competition in the sector, consolidating our position as a truly world-leading university, both nationally and globally.
“While rankings only tell us so much, the fact we are seeing positive results across the board is telling and testament to the hard work and dedication of colleagues from across the organisation who have gone above and beyond over the last 12 months to ensure a positive student experience under very challenging circumstances.”
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, said: “I want to offer my congratulations to the University of Glasgow for being named Scottish University of the Year: a fantastic achievement by the staff and students who continue to lead the way not only in Scotland, but on the world stage.
“This award is a real tribute to the efforts and commitment of staff and students across the University who have risen to the challenges of the last year, and it’s fitting that the University’s strengths in teaching quality, student experience and graduate prospects have been recognised in this way.”
Rachel Sandison, Vice-Principal, External Relations, said: “This result and the title of Scottish University of the Year builds on a truly landmark year for the University, as earlier this month we rose six places in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, to 86th in the world, and recorded significant gains in both the QS World Rankings and the Guardian University Guide. This is in addition to being named the THE University of the Year. I’d like to offer my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everyone in Team UofG who has contributed to these successes.”
Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “A fifth consecutive rise in our rankings lifts Glasgow to its highest ranking yet in our university league table, now on the fringes of the UK top 10.
“One of the most ambitious campus upgrades, at a cost of £1 billion, will enhance a student experience that is already rated highly. Glasgow’s ranking for student satisfaction with teaching quality and student experience rose sharply in the past year off the back its pandemic response. In a year when we have recognised those universities which rose to the challenges of the pandemic, this was another reason to make Glasgow our Scottish University of the Year.”
This award follows on from being named the Times Higher Education University of the year 2020.
