Glasgow University Men's Basketball Club (GUMBC) is a fun and all-inclusive club which provides an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and skill levels to compete, improve their fitness and meet new friends in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The GUMBC consists of 4 teams as well as a recreational program, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to get involved in Glasgow Basketball.

The First Team compete in BUCS 1 as well as the Scottish National League which involves playing competitively against other universities and clubs across the country. They train twice a week, currently on Monday evenings in Scotstoun Sports Campus and Thursday evenings in the Stevenson building. Training provides an environment for more experienced players to compete, improve their basketball skills and fitness. Following a difficult season, the team hope to see more success in both competitions and fulfil its full potential. Games are played on Wednesdays and weekends.

The Second Team compete in BUCS 2, following a great 2022-23 season which saw them winning BUCS 3, and in the SLBA. The team train twice a week, on Monday and Thursday mornings in the Stevenson building. Their games are played on Wednesdays and weekends.

The Third Team compete in the SLBA. Despite a difficult start to the year, the team responded, and a great second half of the season saw them finish 4th in the division. The team trains twice a week, on Thursday evenings in Kelvinhall and Friday Mornings in the Stevenson Building. Training provides an opportunity for players to hone their skills and improve their fitness, often allowing them to be promoted to higher teams in the future.

The International Team compete in friendlies and competitions throughout the year. We were successful winning the British Chinese Basketball League and bringing home the Birmingham Cup! The team train once a week in the Stevenson building.

All our competitive teams have access to the excellent Strength & Conditioning facilities at the Stevenson building.

The Recreational Team is open to all abilities and thus aims to cater to those with little or no prior basketball expierence. This year the team had one session a week, on a Monday in Kelvinhall, which focused on giving players a space to develop their fundamental skills and fitness. The sessions also provide a fantastic opportunity to socialise with new people and become a part of the GUMBC community.

Other ways to get involved

The club offers both table officiating and refereeing opportunities which are great ways to learn more about the sport and meet new people.

Since 2018 the club has been involved with the Rising Stars, a Charity founded by a founding member. This is a Social Outreach basketball programme with the Glasgow University Men & Women's basketball teams organising weekly basketball sessions for primary schools in Govan. There is also an opportunity to volunteer in these local schools to provide coaching sessions – find out more here.

You are also welcome along to our game days and show support to our teams! All the information on our home games at the Stevenson Building can be found on our Instagram page.

GUMBC hosts socials every Wednesday in conjunction with our friends at the Women’s Basketball Club. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and to get to know your teammates. As well as our regular socials, we hold bigger events. These range from Subcrawls, Ceilidhs, 3v3 tournaments and many more! Every year we host an Alumni Weekend, inviting previous players for a few days of fun and an evening of food.

Our First, Second and Third Teams train twice per week, with games on Wednesdays and at weekends, while our International Team train once per week.

Basketball Bursaries

Launched in 2016, the University of Glasgow Bursaries for Basketball aim to promote excellence within the Men's and Women's University Basketball Clubs, to attract the best talent and support athletes in their quest to compete in basketball at the very highest level.
