GU Hares & Hounds Club

GU Hares & Hounds

Glasgow University
Hares & Hounds

The Hares & Hounds is the University of Glasgow's road and cross-country running club and has for over 100 years brought together runners of all skill levels and abilities – from international-level competitors to those just looking to casually jog!

The club trains Monday-Thursday, with easy miles on Mondays and Wednesdays, and coached sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All training starts at 17:30 outside the entrance to the Stevenson Building (University gym).

Training isn't compulsory and you are free to come to whichever session suits you best and go at your own pace. With so many members, there’s always someone there to match you and informal runs are organised all the time our members for anyone interested and can be as hard or as easy as you like!

The club has frequent opportunities for racing throughout the year at road, cross-country, and hill races. We've seen significant success over the past year with team medals at the Scottish Road Relays and we have been lucky enough to count multiple national champions amongst our members.

Racing is something open to all of our members regardless of experience or ability, and even if you’ve never raced before you can be sure to have a great time with lots of support from the rest of the club. Races are always followed up by smelly pints and scran, which are a brilliant way to celebrate the day’s running with the rest of the club!

As well as racing Scottish National & West District races through the year, we also compete in BUCS cross-country, which has over recent years seen the club travelling to Edinburgh, London, and Swansea to compete. This is open to all our members and is a great chance to experience one of the highlights of the year’s racing calendar!

Hares & Hounds is a great way to make new friends at our frequent socials. We have many nights out throughout the year which are always great fun, and range widely from ceilidhs to sub-crawls and flat crawls! We also have several joint socials throughout the year with other sports clubs which provides even more chances to meet new people from across the university!

We also have several trips away each year: there’s a fantastic weekend away in the Scottish countryside early in Semester 1 and we also have a night out in Edinburgh after the Braid's Hill Race. At the end of Semester 2, there is an always exciting warm-weather training trip abroad which has in recent years seen the club visiting Spain and Portugal. These are unique experiences which really stand out in the year’s social calendar.

Come along to our freshers' run at the start of the year to find out more about the club, or if you can't make that then feel free to pop along to any of runs through the year to find out more!
