GU Karate Club

Glasgow University
Karate Club

Karate, or "empty hand", is a martial art stemming from Okinawan martial arts, which were developed in secret when weapons and martial arts were banned on the Okinawan islands during Satsuma clan rule.

We are a multi-styles club, open to all styles and teaching a variety of them. We strive to offer well-rounded training sessions to give members a strong foundation in basic techniques (Kihon) which they can further develop and implement in further training or competitions such as sparring (Kumite) or forms (Kata). We also give opportunities to supplement training with coached and student-led gym and self-defence sessions.

Our Club

We are a friendly club and are open to everyone. You may be a beginner or an advanced practitioner of karate, but you are sure to find what you enjoy here.

Members of the club have access to multiple weekly training sessions and a weekly gym session.
Our training is now also open to alumni, however there are restrictions to this in line with GUSA rules, so please contact us before joining if you are interested.

Our club also has a strong social aspect, with monthly socials, regular visits to the pub after training, occasional potlucks and flat parties.

We train multiple times per week in the UofG Sport Stevenson Building – please check the Club Sport Training Timetable or our social media channels for details.

To join our club, all you have to do is secure gym membership and then stop by any of our weekday training slots, after which you can decide whether our club is right for you and you want to become a member.

You can visit our membership page for more information regarding memberships.

When first coming to training, wear comfortable gym clothes, remove all piercings and jewellery, and be advised there are no shoes or socks to be worn in Stevenson Building Studio 2 or 3.
